Do you find it difficult to make your loft apartment finally feel like home? It is indeed a real struggle, so let me help you achieve it! Here are a few expert-picked tips and tricks for you.
If you’re a brand new owner -or renter- of a loft apartment, it’s no surprise you’re feeling helpless. Lofts have their unique decor possibilities, but to use them to your advantage, you’ll have to cope with their special limitations first.
I’ve tackled these in my latest post. Read it here for a headstart!
Once you get to know your apartment in and out, it’ll be much easier to come up with great ideas to tailor the interior to your liking.
In this post, I want to help you begin, so I’ve gathered ALL the best recommendations that transform your loft into your dream home!
Less is more – Don’t clutter your loft!
If you’re not very keen on always having to organize and clean your belongings, this is a great tip for you!
Never, I repeat: NEVER shop impulsively for home decor! That’s the very beginning of all your possible problems here.
Since everything is exposed and visible in a loft, having more stuff than you actually need for a nice design is your biggest enemy! And since you cannot hide them due to the lack of storage solutions, it becomes an even bigger one.
If you want a nice, clean look, never shop on a whim! Be sure of the style you’re going for, and only shop accordingly! Have a clear image in your mind, and get only the necessary pieces of furniture and decor.
Another major thing to mention is to create storage solutions and assign all your stuff to each! Don’t leave your things out in the open after using them, always put them back to where they belong!
Be consistent with colors and styles!
Once you know your aesthetic, you’ll basically need to implant it into your mind. Don’t mix different styles up, because the results won’t be nice to look at!
As for the colors:
Be a safe player and go with neutrals
Furnish the loft in a simple, but stylish way. If you love an evergreen design, develop a scandinavian or minimal style!
To do that, stick to a white-grey, white-black or white-brown color combination. You can never go wrong with these!
Or be bolder: have colors that complement each other!
If you LOVE a little bit of fun in your home, choose 1-2 main colors and a complementary color for details to match them!
Here are some of the hottest main color combinations for you to use in your loft:
- Olive and Magenta
- Light Steel Blue and Rose
- Mauve/Powder Pink and Pastel Green
- Navy and Ivory
- Medium Blue and Brick/Rust
- Gold and Emerald Green
- Dark Green and Copper Red/Rust
These are all excellent color schemes to begin with, but you’ll need complementary colors as well! And what else could pull these completely opposite colors together than white?
You could also use shades of brown for the same purpose, but be careful! Stick to a darker shade of brown if you’re using lighter main colors, and vice versa.
Gold and marble accents never go out of style!
Now that you’ve settled on the style and colors, it’s time to make a decision on accent colors and details as well.
For the details in your home, use metallic gold or white marble.
You can especially incorporate gold accents into your kitchen and bathroom: get a mirror with gold rim, plates, mugs and glasses with gold handles or gold vases, paint your faucet a golden color, buy a gold soap dispenser or soap holder.
Marble can be used for countertops, coffee tables as well as the fireplace, but once you use them in either case, try not to overdo it. It’ll look tacky!
You’ll find these everyday items in every possible color, size and variation both online or in your nearest home decor shop, so you’ll face absolutely no problem incorporating your chosen complementary color into the tiniest details! IKEA, SHEIN and Amazon are the best go-to places!
And trust me, most of the time, the minutiae is what finishes the whole look! Especially regarding lofts, since the huge ceiling height pulls the eyes away from the big picture and lets them wander from detail to detail.
Don’t keep the walls naked!
Even if you use plenty of colours, it’s inevitable that there will be a tall, bland wall that just disturbs the wholeness of the design.
To avoid the problem, focus on the walls just as much as you would focus on any other part of the room.
Think of ways to accessorize your walls! Create a gallery wall or a corckboard wall, for example.

Put effort into the centerpiece!
Again, since the coffee table is more than likely a centerpiece in your home, you’ll need to have it well-decorated.
The next thing everyone’s going to look at after the chandelier or pendant lights above the center of the apartment, is probably the coffee table!
Therefore, a well-chosen table that matches the style of your loft is crucial! You could never go wrong with a nice wooden one, so I’ll always advocate for that!
Not only the choice, but also the overall impact of your coffee table is important. Here are some tips for decorating it, that will never go out of style!
Get a plain vase!
Choose something that has a simple, neutral color and lacks too much texture or too many details! I prefer the old-schooled tinted glass vases. You want the flowers to take the sportlight, not the vase!
Get fresh flowers !
Who doesn’t love flowers? They are beautiful accessories for your home and also make it so much liveable!
The most stylish flowers include white lilies (they complement the scandinavian style so well!), light pink hydrangeas, a bouquet of colourful tulips and daffodils.
Use books and tissue boxes!
Both functional, and aesthetic. Fashion books are trending right now, but you could use any type of book you have that you cannot use for any other purpose.
Don’t forget the candles!
I’d suggest you decide on scented candles in ceramic, or tinted buried glass jars! The clear glass ones just break the elegance for me.
Place the items anywhere you find appealing on your coffee table!
Choose your carpet wisely!
Let’s be real, your choice of carpet could make or break the look. Take a good look around all the possibilities, because this one decision should NEVER be rushed!
The carpet needs to complement the centerpiece and the couch well both in color, and in shape, but the texture and pattern are just as important. Don’t use a square-shaped carpet if your couch is curved/arched , and vica versa. If you have a marble fireplace, don’t get a patterned rug!
Always strive for simplicity!
But this general truth is acutely true for lofts. In a loft, nothing is hidden to the eyes. So if patterns don’t match, there’s too many textures and colors going on, or you’re not consistent with your details, it’s going to look very forced!
