This post is about loft decorating ideas.
So you moved into your brand new loft apartment… You must be feeling super overwhelmed searching for ways to make it feel like home.
Well, that was exactly how I felt in August 2021, when me and my boyfriend moved in to our first loft apartment. Back then, we could have never imagined what a challenge having a loft apartment would be!
Lofts have a bunch of opportunities other kinds of apartments don’t when it comes to decor, but they also come with special limitations. So they are quite the problem child! But that doesn’t make them any less.
If you’re not quite sure what to do with such a versatile space, this post will definitely help you!
Here are the BEST loft decorating ideas for making the most out of your beloved apartment!
1. Accessorize those boring walls!
You’ve most likely seen loft apartments on social media with their huge walls covered in glass, but you might not have been shown the uglier side of them. Of course, the walls are tall, which is awesome for a splendid view over the city and plenty of natural light.
But the other walls are probably plain and boring and might get you wondering what to do with them.
Don’t worry, here are the best solutions for your problem!
Create a gallery wall!
There’s nothing kinder for the heart than art and there are endless possibilities as to how you want it to look like.
You can make it personal using your dearest memories with your loved ones. Frame the photos and lay them out however you like! It’s an instant mood lifter to be able to look up and see all your best moments!
If you’re not very fond of your life being on display, consider printable art pieces, or visit your nearest home decor shop to search for paintings.
Use shelves!
Cover your dull wall with shelves! Not only do they serve functional purposes, but they will look incredible if you do it right!
Try placing them irregularly for that modern rustic impression, accessorize them with a vase, candles, plants and books. Fairy lights can help maximize the effect. If you’re bold enough, paint the wall a different color. Beige, grey, black and olive are the best neutral choices!
Get a bookcase!
If you’re a big fan of functionality, it’s best if you stick with a bookcase. It can store all your belongings without you having to give up on your aesthetical preferences. If you’re able to, try getting it built in!
Decorate with mirrors
Mirrors have always been the life savers of any space, and this is acutely true for loft apartments.
The hottest mirror choices for your loft are undoubtedly round ones! They complement the otherwise square-shaped apartment so well! Trust me, round objects are such a breath of fresh air.
2. Play with colors!
Nothing can beat a powerful color combo in a loft! Choose two or three main colors to focus on when decorating and stay consistent.
We decided on blue and red. And if you’re skeptical about something so bold, let me tell you how much better it is, than the plain white walls it used to have! Such strongly opposing colors help create focal points for your apartment. They are more gentle on the eyes, than you could imagine.
I’d suggest painting either a wall, or the arch a stronger color. This will be your primary color. You could use the other colors for your carpet, pillows and counters, but keep the primary color consistently in the tiniest details!
3. Let the lighting make a statement!
You simply can’t miss the cushion with a spectacular chandelier or pendant lights. Even if you decide not to finance such a huge investment, you can reach the same effect with budget-friendlier options.
IKEA has my heart in this sense. They have such a versatile array of lamps, that it would be a shame not being able to choose! Whichever style you’re thinking -contemporary, glam, minimal, scandinavian- you’re going to find what you’re looking for.
You’ll more than likely need a floor lamp for your central area, as well as wall spotlights. Wall lamps are also in and I think LED light panels suit lofts so well!
4. Empty space is your biggest enemy!
Space management is crucial for maximal storage. It’s nerve-wrecking when you can’t fit any more of your stuff only because the layout doesn’t let you.
The solution is to eliminate all unused nooks. To start with, get a dresser or a chest of drawers for under-the-stairs and you’ll have one less problem!
5. Don’t forget about the stairs!
The staircase is in almost all cases a centerpiece for your loft, so try not to leave it like it is. You can decorate it with fake creepers from Amazon or LED-lights. So easy it is! If you’re feeling extra bougie, get a stair runner rug as well!
6. Plants everywhere!
Plants are sadly so undervalued in home decor. Not only do they look good, they make you FEEL good as well.
Depending on the style you’re going for, you can do quite a lot of things with plants. You can get a nice vase to put them in, and place them anywhere you want: next to the entrance, the floor lamp, under the stairs, in every corner and even in the bathroom. If you’re striving for that trendy industrial look, place them everywhere you can, so that it feels like a jungle.
Or if you’re just as much of a plant-killer, let’s not complicate things further! Just get good-quality fake plants. We got these from IKEA, but Amazon serves the purpose just as well.
Here’s a great hack! If you have an unused clothes rack and a few potted plants, you’ll only need to buy a few hanging plant holders to be able to create a „rolling garden”.
Even the slightest touches can make your loft feel more like home with these perfect loft decorating ideas!
