If you have a loft, you’ll appreciate the simplicity and harmony nordic styles can create. White walls, wooden furniture are staples, but there’s usually a lot more potential in them!
But why would you want to settle for such a „boring” style? You might ask…
Trust me, nothing compares to that clean look it provides for your loft.
When you have a loft, you really have to find ways not to clutter your home too much, not to make too bold decisions that could end up backfiring -most prominently clashing colors or unorganized spaces ould get you in such a situation. But what if I told you, you can get rid of the problem by the root?
The solution here is a clean and outlined style, that gives no room for extravagancy and therefore bad decisions: scandinavian style decor!
Take inspiration from the BEST recommendations below!
And to make it even more inspiring, I’ve created a step-by-step illustration using Canva, so you can see what’s going on.
Plain white walls
Of course, you’re most likely familiar with this very prominent feature of the style. When incorporating it into your loft, you’ll have to take the extra step though.
Plain white walls create incredible advantages for your loft: the tall, white walls can narrow down the otherwise seemingly huge space and lead the eyes to the centerpiece. Which is good news!
But the plainnes can easily get boring! So never leave the walls naked! For this style, you could use a minimal gallery wall set.
The main colors most suitable for that nordic effect are black and brown. As for the stlye, you’ll want to get either abstract lines, or very minimal artwork.
You can find lots of beautiful printables for this purpose bot hon Etsy and Amazon. They get the job done so well for a fraction of the price! Put your chosen artwork into black, brown or white picture frames, and you’re good to go.
Rugs as focal points
Rugs are often undervalued, but not in your loft and especially not in your scandinavian style loft!
A nice choice of rug plays a huge role in pulling the space together. The decision is yours really, but here are the most important factors to consider!
A woven rug is a great choice for this style! If it’s shag-off, it’s even better, but diamond plush rugs are unbeatable!
As for the color, it’s best if you get a white one, with grey or black details in it. Geometric rugs are in as well, so consider one of these.
You could also pair a white faux cowhide rug with your perfect rug choice, if you’re feeling extra!
Flowy white curtains
These are must-haves if you want to recreate the style to its maximum potential!
If you have a full wall of windows, don’t let it discourage you. You can still get the most perfect looking curtains ever!
First, if you don’t have one yet, get a curtain rail or even better, wooden drapery hardware! Just to pay attention to the details.
Once your curtain rails are installed, you have two basic choices.
One: only use the curtains as decoration. Install the curtains on both the sides of the wall of windows and keep them there. Secure them together a string or white cloth so that they stay in place.
Second: use the curtains for their funcionality as well. Have each piece of glass covered with the curtains.
I’d suggest the second option, since it provides more flexibility. It can adjust to your changing preferences so well! Once you get bored of the curtains, you can just pull them to the sides and vica versa.
Cress benches are your new best friends!
Cress benches are not only great functional pieces of furniture for your dining area, but they also provide aesthetical value for your scandinavian loft!
Use them to your advantage: since a loft doesn’t come with an abundant choice of storage opportunities, you’ll need to create them for yourself.
And for this specific style, you could do that using cress benches! Place one in the hallway or living area, put a standing lamp and a bigger plant next to it, and decorate it with pillows and you instantly have something to sit on while getting ready!
You could use it as a „shoe rack” by placing your shoes under it, or get a few storage baskets to fill that useless empty space under it!
But you could always use them merely for their aesthetical purposes, as shown on the picture!
Round mirrors
Round mirrors are very much associated with that nordic style and you’ll thank yourself if you get at least one for your loft!
Lofts are basically tall and huge squares. As far as the eyes can see, everything is square-shaped and very prominently linear. Which can be frustrating to look at after a while, so you’ll definitely need some rounder objects to ease the squareness.
Always place round mirrors where multiple edges meet, this way you’ll get a more harmonical space. The most obvious place to hang your mirror is right under the loft area.
Try to get a mirror with a brown rim just to create a more cohesive look with the rest of your loft.
Poufs are staple pieces
No matter if it’s from rattan, leather or plush, you can never go wrong with poufs! Place them primarily next to your couch and around the coffee table for that nordic beautiful focal point, but you can get more for empty corner spaces as well!
Be consistent with the colors though! And never match them to your couch. If you have a grey couch, use brown poufs. Too many objects in the same color contribute to a boring finish that you definitely don’t want! Instead, have a complementary color for the details to make the whole place pop! In this case, it would be brown or white!
Wood as main character
It goes without saying, that you’ll need wooden furniture to create an authentic nordic ambiance.
Even if you cannot get your hands exclusively on wooden pieces of furniture, one thing you can’t avoid, is a coffee table in either material!
For this purpose, slab coffee tables would be the best, but anything is suitable as long as it’s from wood. Since your centerpiece is most likely the living area, every piece of furniture needs to fit your chosen style.
Now that you know just how important it is to incorporate wood into the centerpiece, you’ll need to consider including it into the details as well!
As for the tiny details, get wooden candle holders strictly for your non-wooden spaces. A set of minimalist wooden candlesticks would be even better!
Rattan as side character
Rattan is the superior material to use for smaller details. It is such a go-to in scandinavian styl interiors.
But in your scandinavian loft, it’s best if you place rattan furniture into your living area. Looking down from the loft area, you’ll be confronted by such a harmonic composition.
First and foremost, you should get your hand on a few rattan armchairs. Accessorize those with pillows and you’ve basically done your job!
If you fancy rattan more than wood, you should consider a rattan coffee table instead!
If anything, you should definitely incorporate rattan into the design using hanging lamps! They give off that boho vibe, but elevate a scandinavian interior as well.
Wooden trays as decor holders
No need to elaborate further. Get a wooden tray!
Since wood looks weird on wood, I’d suggest you don’t place on the coffee table, rather the couch or your bed!
For merely decor purposes, you can get a simple tray, but if you love functionality as much as I do, try getting a serving tray, since it has legs. This way, you won’t limit its usage to holding your decorative stuff.
And since we’re talking about decoration, here’s how to organize your tray for maximum aesthetic value!
Candles in ceramic jars and geometric objects are a must-have, as well as smaller plants in decorative jars. Accessorize with books and place your personal items as well, such as your glasses or smart devices.
Statement vases
There’s not a single complete scandinavian interior without statement vases!
For this style, we mean statement shapes and not statement textures or colors! What I mean by that, is there’s absolutely no need to go bold!
Get a neutral colored ceramic vase with round shapes for your coffee table! It’s even better if you get a set of different, but cohesively shaped vases, so that you can use the smaller ones purely for decor purposes, and the medium ones as plant pots!
Dry flowers
Speaking of plants: always have them in your scandinavian loft!
Dried flower bouquets are especially fitting! Try pairing dried pampas grass with white hydrangeas and nigella.
This bouquet will fit your dream scandinavian lofts atmosphere so well!
You can find a bunch of these dried bouquets on Etsy. Try to choose one that has no harsh colors, so that it doesn’t destroy the color consistency you’ve just created!
And then decorate to your own liking and aesthetics, put your creativity into it! Here’s how it could turn out:
